A Check Protest, also known as a Certificate of Protest, is a formal document attesting to the fact that a check, drawn from a member account, has been presented for payment and returned unpaid.

Note: A Check Protest is required evidence used for criminal prosecution.

To protest a check, please do the following:

  • The payee, either by written request or personal appearance, presents the returned item to the Credit Union.
  • A $25 fee must accompany the request. The only accepted forms of fee payment are cash, money order or cashiers check.
  • For a mail request, please include your name, address and day time phone number.
  • Payee has the option to receive payment in lieu of Certificate of Protest if funds are available.
  • If funds are not available, a Certificate of Protest is issued to the payee and a copy mailed to the issuer.

Empower Federal Credit Union participates in the Medallion Stamp Program (guarantee of a signature for the negotiation or transfer of securities).

Empower can also supply a Signature Validation:

This is a free service to our members, allowing validation up to $500,000 per transaction. All signers must sign in the presence of a Credit Union agent, provide current ID and be members in good standing. The signers must also be able to show proof of ownership (statement copy) and dollar value of the securities for the transaction to be completed.

  1. Transaction to be guaranteed must involve the sale, assignment, transfer, or redemption of a security.
  2. Not approved for use of the Medallion Stamp, the below items can, however, be verified with a Signature Validation stamp [limit $100,000.00]
    1. Administrative changes to a securities account, e.g. address changes, Beneficiary changes, Account number changes

      To change payees in Bill Pay:

      1. Log in to Online Banking
      2. Go to the Quick Pay Tab
      3. Choose the payee you are looking to update the address on and confirm under the calendar the delivery method Standard Electronic or Standard Paper Check.
        1. If this states the payment will be going electronically this means that the current address and account number on this payee is correct and should not be changed.
        2. The address on your physical bill for this payee is for mailed-in payments only, and the address may not match what is displayed within your account if the electronic address is changed for any reason the address will be updated automatically.

      To change your name, you are required to complete a new Account Change Card signed by all members on the membership account. The form can be obtained at your local branch or by calling the Credit Union.

      Auto Registration

      Mobile users will be auto-registered for Mobile Banking during their first successful login. Auto registration takes place once you have done the following:

      1. Successfully log in via the Mobile Banking website or Mobile Banking app from your phone.
      2. Successfully answer one of your challenge response questions.

       

      Mobile Settings

      The user may change the Lock/ Unlock setting through a pc. If you do not want to have mobile banking available on your phone, please go to the web site and choose 'Lock Mobile Access'. By default, all users will have mobile services unlocked as of 11/13/2012.

      If you lose your phone, go to home banking, select Green Services/eStatements, Mobile Banking and choose ""Lock'. An alternative is to change the password associated with your home banking.

      If you have forgotten your online banking password: 

      1. Enter your username and click “Login” on our Homepage
      2. When prompted to enter your password, you can click on the ""Forgot Password?"" link found on the right side of the password field, above the “Log In” button. You will be taken to a page that will ask you to confirm your identity in order to reset your password.

      1. You can change your Online Banking password by first logging into Online Banking with your current password.
      2. From the “settings” link found in the dropdown menu below your name, select the “Security” tab, and click “Edit” next to the “Password” field.  
      3. Enter your current password, and your new password, then confirm your new password and click “Save Changes”.

      Yes, you can - cleared share draft/check images are available for three months. Deposited check images are not currently available.

      Follow steps below to access a check image:

      1. From the Account Center click on your checking account.
      2. From history, you'll see the words ""View Check"" next to your draft/check numbers.
      3. Clicking on ""View Check"" will open a separate window where the copy of the check will appear.
      4. If the check image doesn't open when you click on the check number, contact the Credit Union by calling 315.477.2200 or 1.800.462.5000 option 2, then option 16

      Yes, our export service allows you to download your account information in a file that is one of several possible formats. These formats are compatible with personal financial management (PFM) software packages. Please be sure to select a file format that is compatible with your PFM product.

      To export information, you must be signed into Home Banking. The Export button is located as part of the Account Access tab. After clicking the link, the form for exporting is available as well as an 'Export Help' link.

      Yes, Online Bill Payment is a free service that allows you to conveniently set-up electronic payments with many popular payees!

      You can sign up for Online Bill Payment by logging in to Online Banking and selecting the BillPay link found along the top of the page. Then follow the instructions. Within two business days, you'll receive a welcoming e-mail indicating that you may begin using your Bill Payment account.

        Rules apply to the ability of a merchant to surcharge when a customer uses a Credit Card (cannot be charged with prepaid or debit card use). 

        If a merchant chooses to charge the surcharge fee, that information must be prominently displayed in the store, at the register, and on your receipt. For online merchants, information must appear on the page listing credit card brands.
        State law will supersede a merchant's right to charge this fee. Some states currently prohibit the charging of this type of fee - New York State is one of them.

        Due dates are always 25 days after the cycle date, regardless of the date, even if it's a holiday. For example, if your payment is due on January 1st and because of the holiday you don't pay until January 2nd, the next time your statement is run, you will be charged interest for not paying the balance in full by the due date.  There is no ""grace"" on credit card loans like other loans.

        However, you can pay your credit card bill automatically by setting up  Auto Pay in Empower FCU Online Banking!

        With Auto Pay your payments can be made from either your checking or savings account.  Auto Pay gives you the choice of 3 payment methods: minimum due, fixed amount, or pay in full.

        With Scheduled transfers, your payments can be made from either your checking or savings account. 

        The amount you choose to pay (whether in one payment or multiple payments) must at least equal the minimum payment due each month to avoid late payments and charges.

        Each month you must pay a minimum payment amount. The minimum payment is calculated as the sum of the following items:

        • Any scheduled payment from a previous billing cycle which has not been paid(past due)
        • 2% of the New Balance as shown on your current billing statement
        • Any amount of the New Balance which exceeds your credit limit (over the limit)

        Note: If the sum of 1. and 2. is less than $10, a minimum of $10 will be due.

        However, if the New Balance shown on your monthly statement is less than $10, the entire New Balance will be due. If the minimum payment computed as above is not an even amount, the minimum payment due may be rounded to the next highest even amount. You may at any time pay more than the minimum amount due.

        A debit card draws from money you have available in your checking account. When you use your debit card, funds are immediately withdrawn from your checking account.

        A checking account is required for a Debit Card. Checking accounts are subject to approval. You can request a Debit Card by calling the Credit Union at 800.462.5000 or 315.477.2200 select option 2, then option 2 to reach our Member Services department.

        When you use a credit card, you are borrowing money from finite line of credit offered by a financial institution, depending on your credit limit. Each month you will receive a statement specifying your purchase amounts and details, as well as the minimum payment due. If you do not pay off your credit card in full each month you will be charged interest on the money you owe.

        You can apply for our Credit Card on-line through your Online Banking or by calling the Credit Union at 800.462.5000 or 315.477.2200, option 3, then option 2. Our Credit Card has a superior rewards program.

        However, due to monitoring systems we have in place to prevent fraud, you must notify the Credit Union in advance of your trip to provide us with information regarding where you'll be going and how long you'll be gone.

        Empower FCU does not charge any international transaction fees. Purchases and cash advances made in foreign countries will be billed to you in US dollars.

        The conversion rate will be at:

        1. A rate selected by the Credit Card company from the range of rates available in wholesale currency markets for the applicable central processing date, which may vary from the rate the Credit Card company itself receives, or
        2. The government-mandated rate for the applicable central processing date, in each instance, plus or minus any adjustment determined by the Credit Union.
